I used to think the figure-8 cast on stretched out way too much, but then I found a trick to make it work perfectly. Just cast on one more stitch than your pattern calls for, but when you come to the stitch that's the slip knot, DROP IT. Then, after you've knit an inch or so of your toe (or whatever you're making), you can go back and tighten up the cast on super-easily.
