Sounds like a fun contest - and timely with holidays coming up. My first projects are going to be a felted tea cozy from leftovers for a friend's b'day next week, and a pair of Fetching for an ailing aunt.
As far as a simple man's hat, check out the Basic Cable Hat in Stitch & Bitch Nation. I recently made one in some black and grey Araucania Nature Wool and it's very masculine looking. The first photo in the book is a vivid striped variation with a huge pompon, but the next page shows a cool guy in the same design. My non knit-wearing husband even said he wants one.

For whatever reason, I can only listen to the first 10 minutes. Apologies if this is explained somewhere else... is it abbreviated on the first day it comes out?

Thanks for making my day! I noticed that I was getting hits today from a link on S&B so of course had to pop in my earbuds and listen to your podcast stream immediately. I was wondering why the link to my blog was in your 1 skein section--what were you all referring to? The little baby hat? Anyway, it was so funny that Jenny's package arrived mid-podcast! Very very funny. I was trying not to laugh out loud 'cause of course I'm in the office.
Anyway, thanks for the mention! I'm off to join the S&B group on Ravelry.

Another great episode! I listened as I was sewing buttons a sweater from One Skein (although that's a deceptively named book, because this took four skeins!). I also have started shedir (but I'm knitting it from a 1,000-plus yard cone - so that doesn't count, I suppose!) already. Guess I'll have to find a few more one skein projects to make for the contest. And I'll have to figure out how to use flickr!
I think I side with Nicole on the one skein dilemma - I feel like it overwhelms my stash (and me!). I think focusing on one skein projects, along with the sweaters and socks and everything else, is a great idea.
Thanks for another great show. Keep up the great work.

What a great episode! Perfect for the time of year. I've started Fetching for my niece, using Patons DK (Debbie Bliss is a bit expensive for side-gifts) and am looking for a guy-hat for hubby, who only wants black (groan). Well done girls, I'll be entering.

Don't forget the doubly warm hat in EZ and Morehouse. You provisionally cast on enough to go around the head, knit a circular tube. Sew the ending row and beginning row into an X and voici! A soft, flexible, warm hat with a brim you can roll up or pull over the ears.

Oh - the impulse buy, eh? Mine are for the most part sock yarn, but Mission Falls is getting up there too!
For boy toques, my most successful one has been an Odessa without beads. Maybe add a repeat or so, boys have big heads I find!
The contest is so on - I have some little presents to make. This is great incentive!

When we packed up to move, I had two "Large" boxes full of leftovers/one skeins. This isn't including all of the LO/OS that I gave away- these were the ones I couldn't part with!
My main "one skein" problem is handspun. I've made socks out of most of the finished stuff, but I have a few that might become hats and shawls. The contest is tempting enough to pull me away from my wheel...

It's funny that your lone skein picture is a ball of Calmer. I got two balls of it in a recent swap and while I'm glad to get a chance to try it, what I really want is to make a sweater from it. Can't make a sweater from two balls! :)

Great idea for new-job knitting! I'm working on Jane Sowerby's "Shoulder Shawl in Syrian Pattern" with some stashed KidSilk Haze--definitely new-job knitting, but not totally mindnumbing. Hopefully by the time I get to the border (the exciting bit), I'll be less exhausted at the end of the day.
Last week I finally crossed the line and have now knitted more yarn than I've bought so far this year!! I've enjoyed finally making time to work with some of the great yarns purchased in the past few years. Stash and Burn is working for me so far, thanks for keeping me inspired.

A made a Harry Potter House Hat (free from the Charmed Knits KAL) for my husband in Cal Bears colors. He's really happy with it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/76113089@N00/1098477134/

I really like the Celtic Cap from girl from auntie-- sexy, *unisexy* cabled hat written for a variety of yarn sizes (3 to 6 sts/inch) and 2 brim choices. Made one in Paton's Classic Merino with less than half of a 100gm ball...
Next time I knit the everlasting bagstopper (I scored a bunch of euroflax linen from destash-- awesome easy gift for my hippie crunchy bunch), I'm going to preknit the handles with a provisional CO and leave it on a holder when I knit the rest of the bag... then pick up sts @ the sides, knit a few garter rows and and graft them on each side. I could seam but hate it, prefer kitchenering. The non-stretch ribbon handle is nice but a pita to put on, and I wouldn't want giftees seeing my less than awesome hand stitching.
My bag is WAY too long, it stretches like crazy-- I think 7" from bottom to bindoff should be more than adequate. The cutting of size should (probably!) allow for enough to knit the handle & bag from 1 sk. of euroflax, but I'd knit the handle before the bag just to be sure.
Anyway! :) Fun episode as always, yall have me hooked to my headphones on Tuesdays.

Hey, just wanted to let you know that I saw Jenny's cropped cardigan in episode 13 and really liked it. I made one using knitpicks ambrosia and it is finishing up blocking right now! :)

I remember hearing you guys lament about how Pakucho is gone. Well, just in case you didn't know it's now being distributed by Trendsetter yarns and there's lots of it out there!

Another wonderful pod cast :-) I love listening to you guys.... and that was sooooo cool that you talked about my armhole question :-) :-), I cant wait for the next podcast.

Hats with cables for men? Absolutely! I hope. (I just sent my guy a cabled hat.)
FYI: My "KNIT MORE" Knucks took more than one skein of Silk Wool DK. I'm not sure how the yardage stacks up. (It wasn't much more than one skein.) Knucks rock! I'm surprised more people aren't making Knucks. I suck at embroidery, but I managed the words (the other stuff I didn't try.) They're good sans embroidery as well.
I'm assuming it has to be done between now and Sept. 17, I can't use old ones? (I was so proud of my one skein moebius!) And it doesn't have to be original? Can it be something I started before the contest but finished after the start of the contest.
I bought 10 skeins of Lorna's Lace Lion and Lamb at Knit2Purl2. Not quite enough for a me-size sweater. Maybe I can combine some solid lion and lamb or some Panache.
I'm trying to find ways to combine single skeins. The Yarn Stash Workbook is on my to-buy list:

Thank you so much for the idea of the duct tape dress form. I am so going to get some of my knitting friends and have a girls night out and we are going to have a duct tape party!!! Love the podcast!

Alls I have to say is "lone skein" looked like Ione Skye for a moment there.
Oh and great episode as always.

Great episode, it totally inspired me to finally make the Calorimetry I bought the yarn for months ago. I finished it and posted it to the flickr group for my contest entry.

I just thought I would mention that SnB nation has a great cabled unisex hat I liked alot on the male model. And in ITunes at least there is a podcast called craft magazine and one the episodes is a video on how to make the dress form from duct tape.

I just had a totally dumb moment. It is the Thread Banger podcast that has the video with Anda from esty.

I recently found a great bootie pattern for a skein of Angel on Ravelry. It can be found on this blog (http://stoneview.typepad.com/), just look in the side bar for the Angel Booties pattern.
